USTA Tennis Tournaments

This summer, Wayside is hosting our annual USTA/New England sanctioned tournaments (see Coming Up section on cover page for dates).

Each tournament has singles and doubles for men and women. The 4.0 sectional tournament also has mixed doubles.
We hope to have a greater Wayside presence at all tournaments. Visit the USTA/New England Web site for the monthly tournament offerings held at Wayside.

You may sign up at Wayside, or online by going to www.usta/newengland.com.

Cardio tennis is back!

Get the workout of your life! Resident summer tennis pro and cardio tennis expert Goldy Sherrill is back and offering instruction for cardio tennis. Currently, we have a class every Monday from 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m. New classes will begin soon.

Contact Steve or Goldy to get started. It is only $10 per class.

Fall Team Tennis update

Look for all fall tennis info on the Wayside Web site. Costs, starting dates, and all other pertinent information will be updated on the site by mid July. Contact Steve Winer for all fall details.

Tennis Tip:
Poaching on a return of serve?

All too often, players only think of poaching when their partners are serving. That usually works well, but a more surprising tactic would be to poach when your partner hits a good return.

Tell your partner beforehand that if he hits a low, crosscourt return, you might cross over. When doing so, be sure to move forward on a diagonal and pick off the next shot. This will force your opponent to play a low shot, giving you a chance to put away the next shot. Good luck!

Tennis Trivia

The answer to our last trivia question, What year did a Frenchwoman win the French Open, and who was it, is 1967, Francoise Durr. Congratulations to Herb Barenberg for the correct answer.

Our current question: In 1933, who was the first man to appear on Centre Court wearing shorts?
