What exactly is the difference between pilates and yoga? Is one better than the other?

Yoga and pilates are both activities that concentrate on improving the mind-body connection and using it to develop a better sense of body awareness.

Pilates is a series of exercise that focus on improving flexibility and strength that engage both the body and mind. The exercises improve posture and spinal alignment by increasing core strength and stability, enhancing functional fitness for day-to-day life, and developing long and lean muscles.

Yoga is an ancient form of exercise also used to develop mind, body and spirit. Classes involve holding various postures to improve balance, strength and stamina. Yoga also focuses on improving breathing, circulation, flexibility, agility and concentration.

It would be nearly impossible to reach a verdict on whether pilates or yoga is better for you. Both have their supporters and you’ll find that their pros and cons vary among individuals. You may enjoy one more than the other or find one more challenging.

Try a few classes of each until you decide which one you like and then make it part of your weekly routine to add some variety to your regular cardio and weight training workout.
